A group of biomedical engineers from the TechRes Lab of the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (Politecnico di Milano), coordinated by Prof. Raffaele Dellac\u00e0, in cooperation with a team of physicians from the Paediatric Surgery Department of the Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam, has developed and patented a smart innovative insufflation device that mitigates risks for patients undergoing keyhole surgery.<\/p>

During this kind of procedure, surgeons use a device called insufflator<\/b> which inflates the patient\u2019s abdomen to create a surgical workspace.<\/p>

Surgical insufflation presents clinical and technological challenges<\/b>. The pressure used to inflate the abdomen should be high enough to create sufficient workspace for the surgeon, avoiding high pressures that may harm the patient and impair breathing and circulation. The optimal insufflation pressure depends on several factors and should be tailored to the individual patient. Unfortunately, the current generation of insufflation devices cannot provide information on the effects of the insufflation pressure on the patient.<\/p>

The smart insufflator<\/b> patented by Eramsus MC and Politecnico di Milano solves this problem, optimizing surgical workspace and reducing the negative effects on respiration and hemodynamics in patients of any age and size.<\/p>

The newborn Dutch company Spatium Medical will make this new technology available to clinical care<\/b> by bringing the smart insufflator to operating rooms worldwide.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
